British Artists' Suppliers
focuses on the supply
of painting materials to British artists, especially portrait
painters, up until 1950. Some drawing materials are treated but
the supply of paper and printmaking materials is not covered
in any detail.
This site is being developed
by Jacob Simon, in partnership with Cathy Proudlove. It would
not be possible without the published work of numerous dedicated
conservators and curators. Ideas for developing the site are
welcome. Please contact Jacob Simon, National Portrait Gallery,

The National Portrait Gallery
maintains a record of artists' suppliers and technical information
relating to portraits in its own collection. In the 1960s the
Gallery corresponded with some of the main firms of artists'
colourmen who supplied portrait painters and other artists with
their materials. More recently the Gallery mounted an exhibition
on picture framing, 'The Art of the Picture Frame' in 1996, with
the associated website, set up in 1998, www.npg.org.uk/live/picframe.asp
