SEN Outreach Sessions

As well as an extensive programme of direct teaching in the Gallery we offer FREE outreach work in the community.

Supported by the Vodafone UK Foundation

The Education Department welcomes bookings from hospital schools/wards and day units. Teachers can book our wide range of innovative and popular activities, linked to the National Curriculum and led by Gallery staff.

Booking
All of the sessions are FREE. They last for an hour and a half and are available during term time on the following days:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays
10.30am - 12noon
or
1pm - 2.30pm

Please try and give us alternative dates; for each term we will take bookings from the previous half term onwards and for the Autumn Term from the beginning of July.

We require a minimum of three weeks notice to book a session. All sessions are subject to availability.

When you make a booking we will need to know your chosen subject, group size and any other SEN requirements.

Topics for Outreach Sessions

Taught by experienced art educators, these practical sessions explore pose, character, expression, colour and symbols in portraiture using the National Portrait Gallery's collection as a basis. The sessions enable groups to explore portraiture and develop their enquiry skills.

We will provide a FREE tutor and reproductions from the collection. Materials are not provided.
All sessions last for an hour and a half.

Choose from the following subjects:

What's in a Portrait?
Working with our artist to explore the elements of portraiture using the National Portrait Gallery's vast collection.

The Changing Face of Portraiture
Discovering the changing style of portraiture with sitters from Elizabeth I to Blur.

Tudor Portraits
Looking at clues, such as pose and symbols, in key Tudor portraits.

Victorian Portraits
Looking at clues, such as pose and symbols, in key Victorian portraits.

3D Life
Working with our artist to explore sculpture from the National Portrait Gallery's collection and create a 3D portrait.

If you are working on a particular project of your own and would like us to fit in with your approach, we welcome the opportunity to tailor-make a session with you.
