Susan Bright
With an essay by Vince Aletti

This stunning book explores the symbiotic relationship between contemporary portrait photography and fashion. The book presents the intensely unconventional, often unnervingly intimate portraiture being made by five of the most creative and original fashion photographers at work in the world today.

Each photographer is represented by a range of portraits, some of the images produced as ads, others commissioned for editorial features. The subjects range from the famous: Kate Moss by Corinne Day, Madonna by Steven Klein and by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Sting by Paolo Roversi to the anonymous Woman I by Mario Sorrenti.

The essays by Susan Bright and Vince Aletti offer a historical context to reflect society's fascination with images of the famous, how these photographers' works have developed from the legacy left by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and others. The texts also focus on the collaborative nature of these new approaches to portraiture. In addition, interviews, email exchanges and descriptions of the process by the photographers and subjects themselves provide a rare insight into the potent mix of fame, fashion and photography.

Susan Bright is an independent writer and curator. She was previously Assistant Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery. She has recently published Art Photography Now and is working on a book on self-portraits. She is currently curating a major show of British photography for Tate Britain.

Vince Aletti writes about photography for Aperture magazine, Modern Painters, the New Yorker and Photograph. He was the recipient of the 2005 Infinity Award in writing from the International Center of Photography. He is currently working on Male, a book of photographs from his collection.
