The Regency in the Weldon Galleries

'Brilliantly Effective' The Times, John Russell Taylor

The newly refurbished Regency displays in the Weldon Galleries have now reopened to the public.

Redesigned by Piers Gough of CZWG, the four Regency Galleries cover a fascinating period of British history from the beginning of the French Revolution to the passing of the Great Reform Act in 1832 - a period of innovation, invention and progress in politics, science, literature, commerce, and industry. Iconic figures of the period include the Duke of Wellington, Admiral Nelson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Jane Austen and William Wordsworth, as well as the monarchs of the period - the troubled King George III, and his successors George IV and William IV.

Over 130 portraits are on display, including paintings, sculptures, miniatures, drawings and pastels. Many works are exhibited for the first time and the Gallery is committed to annual changing displays of miniatures and other light sensitive materials. Unprecedented access to the Regency collections is also provided in new interactive computers in the galleries.

The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
