Dove Cottage

Artists-in-residence Simon Morley, Henry Shukman and Owen Shears are working at Dove Cottage with pupils from disadvantaged secondary schools in rural and west Cumbria. The project draws inspiration from the loan of the National Portrait Gallery's Mad, Bad and Dangerous: The Cult of Lord Byron exhibition. During the workshops students are producing creative writing and participating in devised drama. At the end of the project, the students will have produced an anthology of creative writing and a video.

Quotes from workshop participants

Year 9 pupils

'We were doing the poetry workshop. It was really inspiring and the way Henry Shuckman told us to write was brilliant and it really worked for me. I felt my work was some of the best work I had ever done. I would love to do it again'.

'I thought the Dove Cottage visit was good as it encouraged you to write creatively by looking at details you would normally miss'.

'What a fantastic day! We set about creating a fictional celebrity...then we were filmed, it was a nerve racking experience but great fun. Thanks for a great day!'

'I learned a lot about Wordsworth and the way people lived then. I would love to do it again'.

'I enjoyed learning about Byron, since he was 'mad, bad and dangerous'. I really enjoyed making a video and I'm looking forward to seeing it'.
