COLLABORATIVE EXHIBITION
A renowned author, traveller
and socialite, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was one of the most
colourful women of the 18th Century. From 10 March until 3 June
2007, the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, will show the first
exhibition focusing specifically on the life of this fascinating
woman. This exhibition aims to make historic portraits more accessible
to young people and is part of the National Regional Partnerships
scheme.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu:
An Extraordinary 18th
Century Woman brings together a selection of original letters
from Sheffield City Archives, alongside paintings and prints
depicting Lady Mary, her family, friends and adversaries drawn
from the National Portrait Gallery, Sheffield Galleries &
Museums Trust and other collections. It will also show, for the
first time, a portrait of her son, Edward Wortley Montagu
by George Romney, given to Sheffield as part of the Museums,
Libraries and Archives Council's (MLA) Acceptance in Lieu Scheme
in 2005 alongside the stunning portrait of Lady Mary Wortley
Montagu by Jonathan Richardson from Sheffield City Collections.
Supported by the DCMS/DfES Strategic
Commissioning National/Regional Museum Education Partnerships
Programme.
