Displayed for the first time
is a new portfolio of work by Emma Hardy (b.1963) devised in
collaboration with European Editor of Teen Vogue Jenny
Dyson and the National Portrait Gallery's 150th Anniversary Appeal
'Collecting for the Future'. Acquired for the National Portrait
Gallery collection with support of Teen Vogue and the
Make Your Mark campaign.
These portraits capture exceptional
teenagers who have already made a positive contribution to British
life in fields such as popular and classical music, sports, science
and political activism. Subjects include Harry Potter
actor Daniel Radcliffe, Blaine Harrison of the indie band Mystery
Jets, violinist Nicola Benedetti and footballer Theo Walcott.
Emma Hardy's work has twice been
featured at the National Portrait Gallery's annual Photographic
Portrait Prize as well as in leading magazines and periodicals.
Jenny Dyson comments on the series of portraits:
'This venture brings together a group of images of outstanding
young people whose talent and drive prove it is possible for
everyone to achieve great things and to make a difference. Collaborative
research has revealed nineteen extraordinary individuals from
a variety of fields and disciplines. In carving a path of difference
and uniqueness, I consider them to be the ultimate young rebels
whose success stories are truly inspiring.'
Project photographer, Emma Hardy,
says of her work:
'My pictures try to reflect the lows and the struggles of their
journeys, as well as the highs and possible rewards. Their hunger
and defiance are what I've set out to explore. Perhaps they will
look back on their portraits in years to come and recognise the
determination and strength they possessed as they reached for
their goals.'
